Understanding the True Cost of Revision Joint Replacement
The Ministry of Health (MOH) publishes benchmark costs for joint replacement surgery in Singapore, providing a useful starting point for patients. However, the published figures require context to be meaningful.
Subsidised vs. Private Rates
Direct comparisons between subsidised and private costs are misleading. Private rates most closely reflect the true cost of surgery. Subsidised rates vary widely depending on ward class, Medisave, MediShield Life, and Integrated Shield Plan (ISP) coverage.
In the public system, patients on subsidised care receive qualified treatment — though not necessarily from a certified specialist. Senior oversight is standard. Those on Special Assistance Plans may qualify for heavily subsidised procedures.
Breaking Down the Costs
1. Hospitalisation A typical stay of 4–5 days post-surgery should be factored in. Indicative daily rates at private hospitals:
4-bedder ward: ~SGD 400–600/day
Single room: SGD 1,200–2,000/day
Operating theatre charges: ~SGD 5,000–8,000 (variable by procedure duration and consumables)
2. Implant Costs
Primary knee replacement implant: ~SGD 4,000–6,000 (standard); premium implants add SGD 3,000–8,000
Primary hip replacement implant: SGD 4,000 (cemented, cobalt-chrome) to SGD 10,000+ (uncemented, ceramic-on-ceramic)
Revision implants typically cost twice that of primary implants, reflecting their complexity
A more expensive implant does not automatically mean a better outcome. Implant selection should be matched to the patient's functional demands and anatomy.
3. Surgeon and Anaesthetist Fees These are itemised separately and must be disclosed during financial counselling, as required by law. MediShield Life covers up to SGD 3,540 for the surgical procedure and SGD 7,000 for implants per treatment episode.
MOH Benchmark Figures (2025)
Based on current MOH published data, the median (50th percentile) all-in cost at private hospitals is approximately:
Total knee replacement: ~SGD 35,000–38,000
Total hip replacement: ~SGD 40,000–55,000
At private hospitals, hip replacement costs can range from SGD 40,000 to 67,000 before insurance subsidies. Revision arthroplasty is not captured in these benchmarks — it is a more complex procedure performed by a small number of specialists in Singapore, and costs should be discussed directly with your surgeon.
Our View
Cost transparency is valuable, but it is rarely the deciding factor for a patient who genuinely needs surgery. The more important considerations remain clinical need and the patient-surgeon relationship — particularly for revision cases where surgical experience and judgment matter most. The surgical techniques utilized at this practice are the result of over 25 years of frontline execution in Arthroplasty and Limb Salvage. Having served as an International Trainer and Chairman of the Clinical Competency Committee, we mentored the current generation of surgeons on the strict mechanical principles of precision and soft-tissue balancing. We apply these exact, uncompromising standards to your reconstruction. Learn more about our Academic Distinctions here. Uncompromising care requires clinical independence. Figure 1. Knee replacement designs have been fairly standard for the last 20 years (left on a) although newer designs (b) now allow patients better range of motion (e). These newer designs pioneered by our surgeons in Singapore have been used for the last 10 years and show excellent results. The future designs like the ceramic knee (d) also first implemented in Singapore by our surgeons represent the next generation of hypo-allergenic low-wear implants. For revision surgery implants the necessary technological enhancements all necessarily add to the cost of the implants (c).
Figure 3. The top of the line implants with ceramic articulation and ingrowth stems (a) can be implemented in all hip arthritis cases (b). By putting them in specially designed minimally invasive methods (MIS) such patients can have very high levels of function (c). This patient from Myanmar actually returned to have the other side done by the author at considerable cost (d).
Figure 4. You don't always get what you pay for. In all the joint registries of the world, cemented hips out-perform uncemented hips despite being nearly 40% cheaper. Nevertheless, as is shown in Figure 3 there are certain advantages of uncemented designs over cemented designs. We strongly believe that the joint replacement that is best is the one matched for the patient's needs. Hence, at Limb Salvage and Revision Arthroplasty we offer all options to the patients.
